GUIDE Project Results and Achievements
The GUIDE project documented user requirements, developed an adaptive TV framework and created prototypes for profile setup, simulation and video calling. Its research records include an evaluation with 40 older adults in the United Kingdom and Spain. The original achievements page describes work in progress, while the subsequent publications report specific prototypes and trials.
How did GUIDE gather user and developer requirements?
GUIDE used questionnaires, focus groups and interactive tests to learn how people used television interfaces. The interactive tests let the team observe how participants worked with different controls and collect feedback about their preferences. Developer surveys and workshops added requirements from the teams that would build services for connected TVs. Archived Current Achievements page (external site)
What did the prototype demonstrate?
The EuroITV 2012 prototype showed a setup application for creating a user profile and a video-calling application running between two GUIDE-enabled platforms. The setup application gave the framework a way to carry preferences across services. The video call demonstrated how a service could use that information within a working application. What did the trial with 40 participants find?
The trial found that the User Initialization Application (UIA) could create profiles the researchers considered suitable for the study. The researchers reported favourable responses to several interaction methods, particularly speech and tablet input. They also found that 11 of 40 participants said they would skip the setup process at home, a reminder that the benefits of personalisation need to be clear at the point of setup.
